Former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez has agreed with President Rodrigo Duterte’s idea of changing the country’s name.
Lopez said that it is smarter to dump the country’s colonial past and rename the Philippines to Maharlika.
“The president is amazing…but for what reason should we name our nation after a ruler Of Spain – and there have been uncertainty an as to this specific people integrity,” Lopez composed on Facebook.
The Philippines was named after the Spanish ruler Philip II. The archipelago was a Spanish state for quite a long time until it turned into a US region in 1898.
Lopez focused on that “a name is more than a name. Its a sense of identity. “
“I loooooove the name Maharlika. Maha means great – Lika means People. It means we are a great people!!!! Our biggest challenge as a people is our colonial mentality. We tend to feel small, the foreigners and “white a” are better, imported is better etc etc…. changing our name would address our consciousness problem. Who are you I am Maharlikan – I come from a Great race. My contry is great, I come from a great people.” She said
“It is important to understand what great means. Great means we dont lie, we dont steal, we love the Divine, we love.. That is the sign of greatness.
“If we can define just what it mana to be great – to be Maha – it wold be very god for our consciousness as a people!!!!” she added
President Duterte expressed on Monday his agreement with the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’ supposed plan to change the country’s name from the Philippines to Maharlika.
“Philippines because it was discovered by Magellan using the money of King Philip. Kaya pagdating ng ulol ginawang Philippines. Pero okay na ‘yan, balang araw palitan natin,” Duterte said in a speech in Buluan, Maguindanao.
Actually, tama si Marcos. Panahon ni Marcos, tama talaga si Marcos. Gusto niya palitan [ng] Maharlika, the Republic of Maharlika because maharlika is a Malay word and it means more of a concept of serenity and peace,” the president added
